One of the paramount goals while creating the Universidad Austral de Chile was to find a way to retain the beauty and closeness of nature, while at the same time encourage the acquisition of knowledge. Every walkway and building of the university was planned through group effort, led by Doctor Eduardo Morales, and the final result was well deserving of the University's Motto: "Conocimiento y Naturaleza" (Knowledge and Nature). Throughout the university grounds, the spirit of a scientific community can be felt by any who seek new and innovative answers. The University Austral of Chile was founded under Decree number 3,757 on the 7th of September, 1954, in Valdivia as a response to the undeniable need to create an institution of higher education in the southern part of the country.
The UACh campus situated on the "Isla (Island) Teja", is located between the rivers Calle-Calle and Cruces, and looks out over the river Calle-Calle with a beautiful view of the Valdivian city center. The campus is a patchwork of buildings from various decades and stages in the University's formation, the oldest of which date back to the ´60s and early ´70s, when the University gained its institutional autonomy. Presently, the university is undergoing a process of architectural modernization, as well as a curricular one, thanks to different projects aimed at improving the quality of undergraduate programs and thus allowing the past and present to blend harmoniously.
Today our University is recognized nation-wide for its academic achievements and enjoys a prominent and prestigious position among Chilean universities. The importance of this university is demonstrated through its expansion of satellite universities to other cities in Southern Chile, including Puerto Montt and Coyhaique. In regards to its scientific productivity, the Universidad Austral de Chile is one of the five important universities in the country and maintains a campus and a research center whose connection with the community has resulted in positive and relevant development. In fact, UACh is among the five most prestigious universities in Chile, excelling nationwide in research and teaching.
The University Austral is the proud results of years of hard work, consisting of two campuses in Valdivia, a campus in Puerto Montt, the Trapananda Research Center in Coyhaique, an administrative office in Santiago, 9 faculties (departments), 42 undergraduate degrees, 12,000 students, more than 730 professors, 152,000 books in their ample libraries, Internet connection via Wi-Fi, laboratories, test centers, multimedia laboratories, sports center, museums, test farms, one of the most modern veterinary hospitals in South America and a 11-hectare botanical garden, one of the most outstanding of its kind in the continent. All of the above is the product of an arduous and persevering effort to contribute to the development of Chile.
The Main Administration office of the University Austral on #641 Independencia street, is located in the heart of Valdivia. This central office is the headquarters of the president and his administration. The Provost’s office, located near-by on #809 Yungay street, houses the National and Regional Relations office and the International Relations office whose objectives are to strengthen regional and international connections and collaborations.
Miraflores Campus
The Miraflores Campus contains one of the most important departments of our University: the Department of Engineering Sciences, whose academic programs are recognized nationally. In fact, this is the only institution that offers a degree in Naval Engineering that utilizes its own hydrodynamic model canal and modern multimedia laboratory. As well as being the pioneer in the creation of a Sound Engineering degree that later evolved into a degree in Civil Acoustics Engineering. This faculty has five other engineering programs. The Campus has one of three channels in Latin America in which ship models and ships' hydrodynamic characteristics can be tested, as well as a modern multimedia laboratory. Isla Teja CampusThe Isla Teja Campus is the ecological heart of Valdivia . It is like a classical impressionist oil painting in which the colorful flora and extensive fauna catch the eye and meld together with the University's architecture. Eight of UACh's nine departments are found here. This is the most extensive Campus of our University, which possesses, aside from lecture halls, laboratories and a language center, additional services such as cafeterias, a post office, a bank, a movie theater and the Aula Magna, where the most important events of the University are held. Puerto Montt Campus UAChThe Puerto Montt Campus of the Universidad Austral of Chile is located in the city that bears its same name and is capital of the Tenth Region (Región de Los Lagos ). Puerto Montt is a commercial town that is situated on the rough and windy coast of the South. This campus is one of the most important educational centers in the area. Puerto Montt campus, as well as developing marine sciences, offers a variety of degrees whose programs correspond to the economic realities and needs of the region and nation. These programs integrate teaching, research and community outreach. Windy coast of the South and its campus is one of the most important educational centers in the area. In addition to developing the cultivation of marine resources, it offers a wide variety of programs in conjunction with the local economy. The La Trapananda University Center The Trapananda University Center, in the city of Coyhaique, is situated in the beautiful region of Aisén General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo. Local inhabitants have called it the “reserva de vida” or the “natural life reserve”. The principal objective of the Trapananda University Center is to promote and support research done at the University Austral in northwest Patagonia. This center has progressively concentrated in the development of studies applied to the management and conservation of natural resources. The Trapananda University Center maintains a close connection to the private and public sector of the southern Austral zone. Our University also has an office (Oficina de Representación) in the capital city of Santiago that works to establish the presence of UACh in other regions of the country (primarily in the Metropolitan Region) and at the same time promote communication with other national and international institutions.
Sean bienvenidos al sitio web de la Facultad de Ciencias Veterinarias de la Universidad Austral de Chile. Han pasado ocho años desde que nuestro sitio web comenzara a operar con el objetivo de “dar a conocer el accionar de la Facultad en los principales ámbitos de su quehacer, en relación con actividades de pre y postgrado, investigación y extensión”. La respuesta que ha tenido nos satisface, ya que, se ha transformado en unos de los sitios más visitados de nuestra Universidad, con más de 80.000 visitas; lo que nos anima a trabajar para mejorarlo constantemente.
Es nuestro deseo mantener informados a nuestros ex - alumnos, colegas y especialmente a aquellos jóvenes que deseen realizar sus estudios de pregrado y postgrado en nuestra Facultad, además participar de nuestras múltiples actividades. Para tal objeto, en el año 2005 cambiamos la diagramación para hacerla más ágil y amigable, incorporando sub sitios de nuestros Institutos, tal como el del Instituto de Medicina Preventiva Veterinaria. También, es posible acceder a la Revista “Archivos de Medicina Veterinaria” y conocer sus contenidos.
Nuestra página ha incorporado la información referida a las tesis de Magíster y Doctorado, así como el índice de las Memorias de Título de los estudiantes de pregrado. En la Escuela de Graduados se ha incorporado información sobre las líneas de investigación de nuestros profesores, como las de aquellos que nos colaboran y que pertenecen a otras Facultades o a otras universidades de Chile y del extranjero. Además, podrán disfrutar de una galería de fotos de nuestros titulados en el ámbito del pregrado y postgrado. La Facultad de Ciencias Veterinarias cumplió 53 años desde su creación, junto a la Universidad Austral de Chile ya que fue una de las 4 Facultades fundadoras con que nació esta Casa de Estudios Superiores. La Universidad Austral, hoy día forma parte de una de las 25 Universidades que constituyen el Consejo de Rectores, caracterizándose por ser como se denomina hoy en día una “Universidad Compleja” dadas las 4 actividades que desarrolla y que son propias de su quehacer: docencia, investigación, extensión y servicio.
Por otra parte, la Facultad posee varios Centros, los cuales tienen como principal función apoyar las actividades académicas de pre y postgrado. En dichos Centros, académicos y alumnos realizan investigaciones, tesis de postgrado, memorias de titulo y prácticas por períodos variables de tiempo. El Centro Experimental de Predios Agrícolas (CEPA) el cual es compartido con la Facultad de Ciencias Agrarias, esta constituido por 3 importantes predios: Punahue, Santa Rosa y Vista Alegre, dedicados a la producción de leche y carne bovina, ovinos, aves, plantaciones, etc. Es aquí donde los estudiantes realizan sus prácticas preprofesionales e integran conocimientos relacionados con aspectos de salud animal, producción, reproducción animal y clínica entre otros.
Un segundo Centro dependiente de la Facultad lo constituye el Centro de Inseminación Artificial (CIA), único en el país. El CIA se ha caracterizado por apoyar fuertemente el desarrollo ganadero de la zona Sur, constituyéndose en el único Centro de germoplasma bovino que existe en Chile. Es en este Centro donde los alumnos tienen la posibilidad de interiorizarse de las actividades propias de su quehacer (producción, manejo y procesamiento de semen), como igualmente recibir aspectos formativos relacionados con reproducción animal.
Junto al CIA, la Facultad posee el Centro Nacional de Capacitación y Entrenamiento en Reproducción Animal (CENEREMA). Este Centro, en la actualidad cuenta con un importante Proyecto de apoyo a la pequeña agricultura en participación conjunta con el gobierno de Japón y el Ministerio de Agricultura de Chile (SAG, INDAP, INIA), además, del Gobierno Regional. CENEREMA lleva a cabo programas tendientes a la capacitación y entrenamiento de Técnicos y Profesionales en reproducción y alimentación animal, contando para ello con diversos Centros en Valdivia, Osorno y Puerto Montt. La Agencia de Cooperación Internacional del Japón (JICA) sustenta en gran parte este Proyecto, constituyendo uno de los más importantes en el país y a nivel latinoamericano.
La Facultad posee como otra de sus fortalezas, la Revista Archivos de Medicina Veterinaria, la cual hoy en día constituye la principal revista nacional que publica trabajos científicos en el ámbito de las Ciencias Veterinarias. Esta revista fue creada en 1969 y es publicada semestralmente desde su creación. En 1983, ha sido incorporada por el ISI en el CC/AB and ES, estando indexada en importantes bases de datos a nivel mundial. La revista llega a más de 40 países, recibiendo en canje 95 revistas, seleccionadas por su calidad. Finalmente, es importante resaltar que los trabajos de la revista se encuentran disponibles en la página web www.scielo.cl, proyecto que cuenta con el patrocinio del Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología de Chile (CONICYT) y del BIREME de Brasil, lo cual permite obtener los trabajos científicos vía internet, libre de costos.
