In the early 60's, the state government created and installed the University for Development of the State of Santa Catarina / UDESC, multicampi an educational system, and the region of Lages, given the will and economic vocation created a working group for the implementation of the Colleges of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine in Lages.
It is in the midst of this scenario characterized by agricultural activities, which on 06 February 1973, by Federal Decree No. 71,811, was allowed the operation of a course of Veterinary Medicine in Lages, which began classes on April 10 of that year under the name College of Veterinary Medicine / EsmeV, linked to UDESC.
Prioritizing the quality of education, from the earliest times, the course is readily recognized by the Federal Decree No. 79,851 of June 23, 1977. Implementing, expanding, improving and consolidating the infrastructure to support laboratory, began to appear the first initiatives of research and extension. Although modest in its structure, is inaugurated Hospital Veterinary Clinic.
As of 1980, was transformed into EsmeV Science Center Agroveterinárias / CAV, with the implementation of the course of Agronomy and thus created the Campus III UDESC in Lages.
Today, with the entry of 40 new students each semester, the course of Veterinary Medicine of CAV / UDESC currently has over 700 students enrolled, coming from the south and east, 57 permanent teachers, including 5, 28% graduates, 15.78% specialists; 28.16% 50.80% teachers and doctors. Today, already past its silver jubilee, accounts for the enviable sum of more than 1700 Veterinary Medical Graduates in 57 classes, which are exerting their work in many different locations in Brazil and abroad.
Train technicians to develop activities in the primary sector, performing other activities in the areas of Internal Medicine, Surgery and Animal Reproduction and also act in Teaching, Research, Extension, Planning and Public Health.
