The Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (in Portuguese Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, or UFRGS abbreviated) is one of the largest federal universities in Brazil. It is almost completely located in Porto Alegre, with four campi (Campus do Centro, Campus Saúde, Campus Olímpico and Campus do Vale).
The Veterinary Hospital of UFRGS (HCV-UFRGS), located at Avenida Bento Gonçalves, 9090, Agronomy neighborhood in Porto Alegre, is the the largest in Rio Grande do Sul and one of the largest in Latin America with approximately 20,000 cases each year, between the clinic of small and large animals.
As a subsidiary body of the Faculty, HCV serves to support the practical classes of small and large animals, provides curricular and extra-curricular activities to undergraduate students and veterinary surgeons, participate in research activities at undergraduate and postgraduate students, and provide medical and veterinary community in general. Students in sixth semester onwards, the HCV offers supervised shifts at times between 17:30 and 7:30, Monday to Friday and 24 hours on weekends and holidays.
HCV currently has 31 employees, 9 residents and 11 veterinary technicians hired by the Ministry of Education and Culture. It has 5 outpatient clinics for medical consultations, 3 operating rooms, physical exam rooms, and other treatments. HCV also offers services ultrasound, endoscopy, ophthalmology, dermatology, dentistry and some types of laboratory tests.
