The Course of Veterinary Medicine, Federal University of Pelotas was recognized by Decree No. 750 of 08.08.1969, published in the Gazette on 11.08.1969 and has since trained over 2000 Veterinarians.
The course aims to train a veterinarian able to participate in the social process within a critical perspective, by working with animals, their products and relationships, especially in food production, disease prevention, public health and promotion of rural communities seeking in this way, better use of existing resources and acting as agent of transformation in order to contribute to the development of the region and its population within its area of professional activity.
Part of the Veterinary Medicine Course 13 teaching departments belonging to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (3), the Faculty of Agronomy "Eliseu Maciel (3), the Institute of Physics and Mathematics (2), the Institute of Biology (4) and the Institute of Chemistry and Earth Sciences (1). The course has a duration of 10 semesters (five years) and a maximum of 17 semesters, from the year 2006. Curriculum for the integration, the minimum workload is 4320 hours and refers to the 54 compulsory subjects and Curricular supervised, totaling 216 credits. Every year, 02 Selective Contests (Vestibular) for ticket and offered 60 places for each ticket.
The curriculum is aimed at forming a general and professional disciplines are organized into three segments: basic, general and vocational education, divided into nine semesters, leaving the 10th for the completion of supervised internship in veterinary medicine. There termed elective courses that allow students to deepen their knowledge in areas of their choice. The course runs in the morning and afternoon.
