The UFRRJ has its origins in 1910 and officially opened in 1913. In March 1916 it merged with the Agricultural School of Bahia and the Middle School Studio Practice Pine, which today are installed on the Campus and School Pinheiral Agrotécnica Nilo Peçanha.
That same year diploma is the first class of Agricultural Engineers, with two students, and the following year, the first class of veterinarians, with four students.
In February 1934, the decree made the courses in the National School of Agriculture, National School of Veterinary Medicine and the National School of Chemistry. The National College of Agriculture National Veterinary adopted the common regulations and institutions have become the standard for teaching agronomic This year the country formed 12 and 16 Agronomists Veterinarians.
In 1938 the National Veterinary School became subordinated directly to the Minister state.
With Courses on Specialization and initiated a program of postgraduate training for specific areas of the curriculum of Agronomy and Veterinary.
Only in 1963, the Rural University was renamed the Federal Rural University of Brazil, involving the National School of Agriculture, the National School of Veterinary Medicine, the School of Forestry, Technical Education and Family Education, courses middle level technicians of the Technical Colleges of Home Economics and Agricultural Ildefonso Simoes Lopes.
The current name - Rural Federal University of Rio de Janeiro - came with the 4759 Act, 1965. In 1970, the University has expanded its areas of teaching, research and Extension, and in 1972 started the system of courses under the credits.
In 1968, the National School of Agronomy and Veterinary turn into undergraduate courses.
The first courses to graduate in UFRRJ started its activities in 1965. Three courses were offered at Masters level: Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Parasitology, Agronomy-Soil Science and Chemistry - which have been consolidated over the years, leading to the Doctorate degree in the years 1977, 1979 and 1993, respectively. From 1976 to 1988 were deployed to the Masters in Science and Food Technology, Veterinary Pathology, Microbiology, Veterinary, Agricultural Development and Crop Science.
