Charles Sturt University, School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences

Welcome to the School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences at Charles Sturt University. The School provides undergraduate courses in Animal Science, Equine Science and Veterinary Science, as well as a Graduate Certificate in Captive Vertebrate Management, from its excellent and new facilities on the Wagga Wagga campus of the University. You can find information about all of these courses in these website pages.
Our courses are new or recently revised. The veterinary science course commenced in 2005 with a vision to provide veterinarians for rural Australia. The animal science degree began in 2007, particularly to prepare graduates for careers in animal research but also to provide training for employment in a wide range of jobs working with animals. The equine science program was revised in 2006 in order to take advantage of the specialist staff joining the School as a result of the introduction of the veterinary degree. As a student in our School you will enjoy a sense of excitement and enthusiasm amongst both staff and students as these new courses are rolled out in new or refurbished laboratories, clinics and practical class settings.
Staff of the school are very active in research and postgraduate training in research towards Masters and PhD degrees. We have a wide range of active research programs in equine nutrition, physiology and pharmacology, farm animal production and reproduction, veterinary parasitology and many other areas of animal science. To find out more, please look through our research pages or contact a staff member with research activities that interest you.
If you have any further enquiries about how you might apply for a student place in one of our courses, or how you might be able to help us meet our objectives, please don’t hesitate to contact us. You may be interested in joining our staff if your qualifications, experience and interests align with our vision; if so, please let us know. I am sure you will find it a friendly and rewarding place to visit or to join as student or member of staff. The Veterinary Clinical Centre at the School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences opened in April 2008. The facility is located on Agriculture Avenue adjacent to the Equine Centre at Charles Sturt University. The Veterinary Clinical Centre includes a modern large animal hospital with operating theatres, sophisticated diagnostic imaging facilities, a reproduction unit and small animal teaching laboratories.  The staff at the Veterinary Clinical Centre provide a first opinion and a referral service for horse owners and veterinarians, and a referral service for farm animals and pets. There is no first opinion service for farm animals and pets.
