THE MISSION OF THE UAEM

As a fully autonomous public university, the UAEM asserts its principles and constitutes its obligations to lie with the historical legacy of the institute’s community and with the invaluable commitment of the current university generation.  It is oriented towards studying, generating, preserving, transmitting and extending universal knowledge and towards being of service to society in order to contribute to the creation of new and better forms of human existence and coexistence and to promote universal, humanistic, national, free, just and democratic conscientiousness that harmonizes with our own way of being and feeling as residents of the State of Mexico and as Mexican citizens.

It is the mission of the UAEM to provide high school and college level education, to do humanistic, scientific and technological research and to promote and spread information about the advances in humanism, science, technology, arts and other cultural manifestations.

INSTITUTIONAL VALUES

The comprehensive formation of the human being is achieved through the development of science, as it is understood in a broader sense as knowledge of the universe or understanding of truth and the teaching the values that form the structure of society.  The university will intend to clarify and strengthen in their students, teachers and administrative personnel the values that its own legislation lays down or its community demands.

SEARCH FOR THE TRUTH

The human being educated by the university is ready to seek truth, to take on a questioning attitude in order to abandon the securities society provides with its pre-established rules and defined relationships.  To question means to move away from the type of certainty that was created to place oneself in the correct spot and to be creative.  The university community has the responsibility to find new and different political, social and economic means in order to offer society a new horizon.

HUMANISM

Humanism established itself in the search for truth.  This not only means the defense and promotion of what defines human essence, in as far as it concerns being worthy, inviolable and subject to rights, but also that which the human being is able to become.  In this sense the university must establish itself as a privileged place, from where human potentials are developed, as well as a bastion for supervising that each person fully develops his/her potentials, for the sake of a more just society, where equitable and respectful behavior predominates.

The humanist not only attends to man but he/she also promotes actions that position him effectively in the face of cultural processes.  He/she discovers what is humanly valuable in others for renewal of society.  University education can be called humanistic when the knowledge of cosmos is the result of a strictly spiritual evaluation.

JUSTICE

Justice guarantees equality of conditions for all people, which enables their individual and social realization; likewise it means to watch over the right to freedom in a balanced manner in order to contribute to social harmony while protecting the interest and intrinsic rights of people.  A society can maintain itself and advance if it sees to its rights and obligations, thus the university will promote justice as a virtue of equality, which exists and is recognized amongst all human beings because are entitled to the same kind of dignity just for being persons.

PLURALITY

Justice is a necessary condition for plurality of thought and people.  No way of thinking is prohibited, which allows us to call the university a school of democracy.  Plurality entails the possibility of coexisting with harmony and respect for the most diverse ways of being and thinking or in other words it stands for a way to connect to otherness and thus to enhance personal knowledge and vision of reality through openness and dialog with other forms of existing in the world.  This is closely related to the value of tolerance.

AUTONOMY

The university’s autonomy is the environment, where freedom finds a way of expressing itself.  With both freedom and autonomy covering all aspects of it, these values are protected by the university community by using this context rationally and creatively, taken as their own.

This means that the institution’s actions are to be oriented towards achieving the fundamental objectives and purposes of the university itself, beyond political and economic outside interests that might distort the task society entrusted the university with, thus representing the protection and promotion of the university community’s interests for the sake of its own development.

LIBERTY

This is the fundamental value of mankind, it entails “openness towards one’s own transcendentality”, which means to be in charge of one’s existence, concerning that which is and that which can be.  In such a way that it can serve as a foundation to a life, where abilities and potentials can be developed free of obstacles and with respect to other projects and ways of life, as well as watching over the development of the community as a whole.

TRANSPARENCY

A value strongly related to honesty.  Transparency implies the utilization of common resources for the sake of a collective benefit above all personal interests, as well as strict compliance with the objectives and purposes these resources were originally allotted to and all this in order to obtain a benefit for the community, so that it may deposit its trust in the university’s way of acting.

The university student is responsible for him-/herself, for his/her intellectual progress, moral values, and for achieving his/her professional goals.  Society expects the university graduate to be a professional, who performs his/her activities with great care and knowledge.  He/she is also recognized for his/her clarity, going straight to the point, without lies: he/she is a symbol of transparency.  His/her work is known and evaluated, his/her decisions are observed and judged, his/her personal property consists of no more than what is permitted by morality and statutory law; society has the right to see our university as a place of absolute transparency with nothing to hide.

HONESTY

Honesty is the virtue that gives the university student the strength to take charge of his/her obligations with the spirit to do so, always within the established order, in compliance with regulations and standards, without being deceitful for his/her own benefit but rather always giving preference to the university community’s best interest, since in regard to it he/she must act truthfully and promoting its interests and benefits.

SUSTAINABILITY

The University must be build on a critical bastion that for the sake of social well-being shall contribute in creating a promising and feasible future, in the understanding that knowledge is a central factor in awareness raising in order to pass on to future generations a world that is environmentally and socially viable.

RESPONSIBILITY

The university student’s responsibility entails taking charge of his/her own acts and their consequences, something that not only involves knowledge, but also sensibility about his/her personal limitations and possibilities, as well as those of others, in a permanent game of conciliation between the individual and the community, where priority is given to the tasks and activities entrusted to the individual for the benefit of the community.

DEMOCRACY

A value that is not only part of the process by which the university authorities are elected, but also of daily university life, letting all of its members participate in the rights and obligations that govern it, in the possibilities that it offers and the work that it requires, all this in an environment of dialog and harmonious participation that tends to build a pluralistic institution with an openness for debate.

IDENTITY

The university student’s way of acting must be primarily intended on creating a sense of unity and commitment within the university community, which shall entail watching over its values and objectives and feeling part of them; which means, after all, to make individual and community objectives coincide, while looking to achieve harmony and mutual complementation.
