The University of Selcuk, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine

Selçuk University was established in 1975. The name of the University comes from the Seljuk Empire whose capital was Konya and which reigned in Anatolia. In the academic year of1976-1977 Selçuk University started education with its two faculties, Faculty of Science and Faculty of Letters, 7 departments, 327 students and 2 permanent lecturers. Selçuk University has attained the state of a modern university by its physical structure, technological equipment and social-cultural facilities which have been put forth in recent years. Entering the 21st century, the age of science, by confident steps, the university has four modern campuses; three in Konya city center and one in Karaman (which is a city located in the southern part of Konya), and Vocational Colleges in 24 different locations. Today, Selçuk University is carrying out educational activities at 16 faculties, 1 State Conservatory, 1 Higher Education School of Foreign Languages, 25 Vocational Schools of Higher Education and 13 Research and Application Centers. Selçuk University has nearly 60,000 students and a population of approximately 3,900 academicians and administrative personnel.
Selçuk University, with its successful students, gives careful consideration to increasing the quality in all subjects and using knowledge and technology, which are the requirements of the new age. Without any discrimination, it has put 7,000 modern computers into service of its students from all programs in 100 different laboratories. Furthermore, besides face-to-face education, some courses are carried out on University Television and the internet within the extend of Distance Learning Programs. The modern central library which was founded by own resources of the university is open to the students’, academicians’ and researchers’ use.
On behalf of the President of the European Association of Establishment for Veterinary Education (EAEVE) and the local organizing committee EAEVE 2007 it is our privilege to invite you take part in the EAEVE General Assembly 2007, which will be held in Konya, Turkey from May 31 till June 2, 2007 . The EAEVE General Assembly 2007 will take place at the Süleyman Demirel Congress and Conventional Center, which is situated in the centre of the University campüs. 
Selcuk University, founded in 1975 in Konya which is one of the flourishing cities located in the central Turkey and well-known of its “Whirling Dervishes” and “Mevlana” who is a world-famous mystic philosopher and poet.. Konya has long historical and cultural background that expands to cover the cultures of Hittite, Roman, Byzantine, Seljukid, Ottoman and Turkish Republican periods. Because of being the capital of Seljuk (Selçuk) Empire for a long time, Konya still has the characteristics of a city of civilization and culture. In the medieval times the city had many medresahs which were the universities of the time. Konya has been recognized as an important center for agriculture and stock-breeding. It also has a tradition of commercial culture of international trade. Recently, there has been a great development in medium-large sized industry in Konya region. The recent population of the metropolis is about a 1,000,000 and Konya is the 5th major city of Turkey. Selcuk University is now one of the leading education and research institutions in Turkey with its 75,000 students and more than 3000 thousand faculty members and administrative staffs. Currently, the university has 4 institutions, 16 faculties and 25 vocational schools, which include Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Engineering, Agriculture, Dentistry, Law, Business, Economics and Administrative Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Education, Linguistics as well as Fine Arts. Although there are four major campuses, the main campus, “Aladdin Keykubadat Kampusu” holds most of the faculties. After a steady growth in the last quarter century, Selcuk University, we think, is now ready to undertake collaborative research and share its excellent facilities with other country’s academicians.
Selcuk University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine
Selcuk University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (SUFVM) was established in 1982 in Konya, which is considered as one of the major animal production areas of Turkey. SUFVM was founded and started veterinary education as the fifth veterinary institution of Turkey. As of today, SUFVM is considered as a pioneer and outstanding veterinary institution of Turkey based on its physical capacity, research, quality of education and academic staff, postgraduate programs and international affairs.
Physical capacity
Having total floor area over 13000 m2, SUFVM meets EU criteria with its lecture rooms, labs, and training areas.
Academic staff
SUFVM has a strong and experienced academic staff which compromise 49 full professors, 28 associate professors, 13 assistant professors, 31 research and teaching assistants, 3 specialists. The average academic staff per student is about 6.2.
Postgraduate programs
There are 17 different master and PhD programs in contribution of all departments at the SUFVM.
Education
Veterinary education at the SUFVM was reorganized based on criteria of European Association for Establishments of Veterinary Education (EAEVE) and BOLOGNA process. Veterinary training at the SUFVM takes 5 years (10 semesters).Graduates are awarded with a Diploma of Veterinary Surgeon equivalent with MSc degree and can thereby directly enroll in a PhD program.
The education includes a four-year theoretical and practical training and the 5th year covers internship program, in which students rotate between the departments. The internship program mainly focused on practical training on main subjects, which provides a chance for students to review and harmonize their knowledge. In addition, in order to shed a light on students’ future preferences, a number of different technical trips are organized to state and private organizations. The education at the SUVFM is mainly focused on theoretical training and the ratio of theoretical / practical training is 1/1.2.
Practical training possibilities
There are several laboratories including anatomy, biochemistry, histology, physiology, molecular biology & genetics, microbiology, pathology and reproduction and IVF, parasitology, virology as well as a computing facility. These facilities are used for research, diagnosis and undergraduate teaching.
Departments of Internal Diseases, Surgery, Reproduction and Gyneacology and Artifical Insemination provide various examinations, diagnosis, medication and surgery services. Faculty Clinics are used for research purposes and these activities provide an excellent opportunity for undergraduate training. The hospitalization facilities are available for a 24 hour and 7 days a week. Thanks to animal ambulance and animal trailer, extended clinical services are also successfully provided for out of Konya region.
Faculty Experimental Farm
The faculty maintains a production and research farm located about 1 km from the Faculty in the main campus. Various animal species including cattle, sheep, dog, chicken, quail, partridge, pheasant as well as feed production facility and milking parlour are also available for teaching purposes. The Faculty also maintains and manage 840 hectares of farm field for forage production.
In the main campus area, the SUFVM manages an equestrian centre. This facility not only houses horses but also used for teaching for management, feeding and medical treatment. Riding club is also open for public livery and riding. Horse riding center is available for sportive activities and students training.
Meat and Dairy Research and Production Units
Different meat and dairy products such as sausage, salami, hamburger, cheese, yogurt, butter and ice cream are produced with student contribution and served for public consumption. These facilities are also used for teaching and research purposes.
International exchange programs
Believing that increased mutual contacts between the academicians of different nations will lead a better understanding of the dynamics of globalized world and improvements of human skills, SUFVM is seeking about the possibilities for establishing a long-term partnership with the distinguished Veterinary Faculties around the world. With international collaborations, SUFVM seeks academic student exchange programs and so conduct research and gain experience. Equally, international students and academicians are always welcome to SUFVM under the same conditions.
Accreditation
SUFVM have awareness of international requirements and have goals to provide high quality veterinary training, which can be achieved by an international evaluation system. European Association for Establishments of Veterinary Education (EAEVE) sets minimum requirements of veterinary training and to evaluate veterinary institutions in EU. SUVFM was visited and evaluated by EAEVE in March 2002 and was the first Turkish veterinary faculty within the European evaluation system.
SUFVM will host the Annual EAEVE Assembly between May 30 and June 2, 2007 in Konya, Turkey. “It will be a very special assembly because we will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the EAEVE. This 20th general assembly will be an opportunity for us to look back at how long a way we have come and, as well as look ahead in to the future trying to find new ways for improving the quality of veterinary teaching. The fact is that that is the first assembly outside of Europe shows the openness of our association” said Professor Marcel Wanner, President of the EAEVE.
