The Saratov State Agrarian University named after N.I. Vavilov is one of the largest and leading educational and scientific establishments, training experts for the Agribusiness of the Saratov Region, the Volga Region, and the Russian Federation.
The University ranks very high among the 100 best institutes of higher education in Russia, and ranks fifth among Russian agricultural institutions.
In 2002 French Association of Industry Encouragement (Societe d’Encouragement pour l’Industrie Nationale – SPI) marked the University with high award – gold medal for stability and dynamic development.
In 2007 letter of commendation of German Federal Ministry of Foodstuff, Agriculture and protection of consumers was awarded to the Saratov State Agrarian University for the special contribution to the practical training of the students in Germany.
Nine departments, two branches of the University, seven representative offices, lyceum, twenty three lyceum classes at the base of rural secondary schools, twenty offices and services, publishing house and museums educate specialists in various fields of agriculture.
More than twenty thousand students, including ten thousand students of full-time tuition are trained by 1200 highly skilled teachers, which are the best representatives of science. There are more than 160 Doctors of Science, Professors and more than 690 Candidates of Sciences, including associate professors.
The library of the University is one of the largest and the oldest high school agricultural libraries of the Volga region. It is a member of Russian Library Association. It has 1.5 million volumes.
The University has a unique museum complex:
memorial study museum of N.I. Vavilov, Museum of history of the Saratov State Agrarian University named after N.I. Vavilov.
natural-scientific museums: entomological and zoological museum, pathoanatomical museum, parasitology museum, Biology museum, Veterinary and sanitary museum.
September 15, 1913 – the High agricultural courses opened in Saratov.
1917-1921 - one of the greatest geneticists of the world, Nikolay Vavilov researched and taught at the high agricultural courses.
January, 1918 - a group of scientific employees and students led by Professor F.K. Karaulov was transferred from Uriev Veterinary Institute (Tartu) to Saratov, forming the Saratov Veterinary Institute.
April, 1918 - the High agricultural courses were transformed into the Saratov Institute of Agriculture.
September, 1918 – the Saratov Institute of Agriculture and Saratov State University were merged.
1922 - the Saratov Institute of Agriculture separated; its first director was famous scientist-biologist Professor V.R. Zelensky. The educational process was carried out by the outstanding scientists G.K. Meister, N.M. Tulaikov, N.I. Sus, A.A. Bogomolets, R.E. David, and others.
1923 – the land-reclamation faculty was opened in the Saratov Institute of Agriculture; transformation of high school to the Institute of Agriculture and Land-Reclamation.
1929 – the zootechny faculty was opened in the Saratov Veterinary Institute; transformation into the Saratov Zootechny and Veterinary Institute.
1932 – the Moscow Institute of Agricultural Engineering transferred to Saratov and was renamed to the Saratov Institute of Engineering and Electrification of Agriculture.
1994 – the Saratov Institute of Agricultural Engineering became the Agro-Engineering University; the Saratov Institute of Agriculture became the Saratov Agricultural Academy; the Saratov Zootechny and Veterinary Institute became the State Academy of Veterinary Medicine and Biotechnology.
1998 - three high schools of the agrarian structure became the Saratov State Agrarian University named after N.I. Vavilov.
Saratov is one of the largest cities of Russia possessing high industrial, scientific and cultural potentials. The city is located at the Volga bank and stretches out for 25 km. Its territory is more than 37 thousand hectares. The left and the right banks of the river are joined by the bridge 2800 m long which is the longest one in Europe. The population of Saratov is over one million persons.
Now 15 high schools train the experts in the city. The Saratov state agrarian university named after N.I. Vavilov ranks high among them and it is one of the largest and leading training and scientific centers for studying experts in agriculture.
There are a lot of theatres, concert halls, libraries, museums in Saratov and their doors are always hospitably open for inhabitants and visitors of the city. The most popular among citizens and the guests of Saratov are the Theatre of Opera and Ballet named after N.G. Chernyshevsky, Academic Drama theatre named after I.A. Slonov, the Theatre for Youth and the Puppet Theatre “Teremok”
. The Saratov circus is the first Russian immobile circus which has been founded in 1873 by famous in Russia circus artists - brothers Nikitins.
Since 1986 the musical festival named after Sobinov L.V. is annually held in Saratov. It is a real holiday of opera art.
There are always a lot of visitors in the halls of the State art museum named after A.N. Radischev. Its richest exposition is constantly replenished.
Two literary museums which store and study creative heritage of N.G. Chernyshevsky and K.A. Fedin continue their educational activity.
It is possible to get to Saratov by train, by plane and by bus from Moscow.
