WROCŁAW UNIVERSITY OF ENVIRONMENTAL AND LIFE SCIENCES The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine

WROCŁAW UNIVERSITY OF ENVIRONMENTAL AND LIFE SCIENCES focuses its wide-ranging activities on education and research covering agriculture and related sciences. The profile of the WUELS and its mission are directly involved in transformation programmes dealing with rural development and food quality and management, with full respect paid to social support and interaction. The knowledge acquired and the research projects realised at the WUELS make provision for future development, regarding all aspects of environmentally sustainable development, which is friendly to human and animal welfare.
The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine continues the tradition of the School of Veterinary Medicine in Lvov (1881-1939). Officially, its activities started on 1 November, 1945, when it was the largest Faculty of the University and Polytechnic in Polish Wrocław after II World War.
At present, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine consists of 9 departments and employs 98 academic teachers, including 29 professors and doctors with habilitation (a post-doctoral degree). In academic year 2003/04 – 1047 students were enrolled.  The Faculty Council of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is authorised to confer university degrees – Doctor of Veterinary Science and Doctor Habilitatus of Veterinary Science. 
The earliest traces of human settlement in what is now Wrocław date back to the Neolithic- the 8th and 7th centuries BC. On the present-day Cathedral Island a fortified settlement existed in the 8th and 9th centuries and was enlarged in the 10th century. The first written records mentioning Wrocław date from the year 1000, when a bishopric was established there within the archdiocese of Gniezno.
In present time, as the main city of Lower Silesia it is the region’s administrative, economic, and cultural capital. Wrocław, the fourth largest Polish city in terms of population. A major cultural, academic, and economic centre. Home to thirteen institutions of higher education, including Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences.
