
The University of Veterinary Medicine is the only academic veterinary institution in Austria and the oldest in the german speaking countries (founded in 1765).
Since 1996 the university campus is located in the 21st district of Vienna. About 1000 employees and 2300 students are working on this campus that also includes the university's animal hospital, spin-off-enterprises and branches of business partners.

Established: In 1765 as the „K. and K. Horse Curing and Operation School“ according to the founding edict by the Empress Maria Theresia. Teaching began in December 1767.
Location: 21nd district in the north of Vienna (since 1996, before 1996 in the 3rd district)
Campus: 47 buildings spread over an area of 15 ha, completed in 1996.

Research is concentrated into four main areas or profile lines:
- Profile line 1 - Regulation of physiological and pathophysiological processes.
- Profile line 2 – Infection and prevention
- Profile line 3 – Biomedicine and biotechnology
- Profile line 4 – Food safety and risk analysis

The Senate is an executive board including representatives of the university's academic staff, students, and administration staff. The Senate's decisions concern e.g. curricula and examinations.
