The University of Veterinary Medicine is the only academic veterinary institution in Austria and the oldest in the german speaking countries (founded in 1765).
Since 1996 the university campus is located in the 21st district of Vienna. About 1000 employees and 2300 students are working on this campus that also includes the university's animal hospital, spin-off-enterprises and branches of business partners.

Since 1996 the university campus has been located in the 21st district of Vienna. About 1000 employees and 2300 students work on the campus, which also houses the university's animal hospital and various spin-off-enterprises and branches of business partners.
Established: In 1765 as the „K. and K. Horse Curing and Operation School“ according to the founding edict by the Empress Maria Theresia. Teaching began in December 1767.
Location: 21nd district in the north of Vienna (since 1996, before 1996 in the 3rd district)
Campus: 47 buildings spread over an area of 15 ha, completed in 1996.
Research is concentrated into four main areas or profile lines:
- Profile line 1 - Regulation of physiological and pathophysiological processes.
- Profile line 2 – Infection and prevention
- Profile line 3 – Biomedicine and biotechnology
- Profile line 4 – Food safety and risk analysis

The Senate is an executive board including representatives of the university's academic staff, students, and administration staff. The Senate's decisions concern e.g. curricula and examinations.

The Animal Hospital of the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna is at your disposal all year long and 24 hours a day.
For Veterinarians and Animal Owners
Our Animal Hospital is run by the clinics of the Vetmeduni Vienna and is primarily a university related referral clinic for veterinarians and veterinary clinics. Moreover every owner of an animal can make use of the merits and services of the VUW's Animal Hospital (exceptions: the clinics for swine, ruminant animals and imaging diagnostics).
The Main Focus: Clinically and scientifically interesting cases
The different clinics of the whole Animal Hospital are predestined for and focused on challenging cases. There are different ambulances offering highly specialised and state of the art services. In addition the Vetmeduni Vienna is a place where the results of research work are directly integrated in practical medical use.
