One of the biggest higher educational and scientific centers of the RA the State Agrarian University of Armenia (former Armenian Agricultural Academy) was founded in 1994 on the basis of the Armenian Agricultural and Yerevan Zootechnical and Veterinary Institutes. These two higher educational institutions, in their turn, were established in 1930 on the basis of the faculty of agriculture of Yerevan State University. The educational structure of the State Agrarian University of Armenia is composed of six departments (Agronomy, Foodstuffs Technologies, Economics, Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry, Farm Mechanization and Transportation, Hydro-melioration, Land Tenure and Land Cadastre), Master’s Degree, Post-Graduate Department, Department of Agribusiness (Armenian-American Teaching Center), Department of Tuition by Correspondence, Department of Continuous Education and Qualification Improvement, Supplementary Education and Strategically Planning Center, Base Lyceum, regional line classes and the State Agricultural College.
The authorities of SAUA are the personnel representative assembly, the Council of the Academy, the Scientific Council and the Academy Administration. The self-government bodies are the Student Council, the Student Scientific Society, the Trade-Union Committee and the Union of Graduates.
The University has a highly qualified professorial and pedagogical staff of 627 lecturers, 72 Doctors of Sciences and 290 Candidates of Sciences.
9870 students (in 2007) are enrolled at the Academy, and among them 4230 are in the day time and 4920 are in the corresponding studies departments, 181 - at the college, 288 – at the lyceum, 119 – in the Master’s degree and 132 – in the Post graduate departments.
Since September 2004 the two-stepped educational system has been implemented in all 37 specialities of SAUA. After graduating from the University graduates receive Bachelor’s degree. The best ones can continue their studies in Master’s degree.
In the Department of Education by Correspondence examinations are held on 22 specialities. According to the resolution of the Republic of Armenia in September 2004, department branches were founded in Sisian town (Sjunik Region) and in Vanadzor town (Lori Region).
Six specialized Academic Councils operate at the Academy regarding the scientific degrees of a candidate and a doctor. These are the research board for 15 specialties: Agronomy, Veterinary Medicine, Animal Husbandry, Engineering, Technologies and Economics.
Since May 2003 the scientific journal “News of Armenian Agricultural Academy” has been published (after renaming the institution it is called “News of the State Agrarian University of Armenia”). Due to published Russian and English articles it is available for specialists of many foreign countries. Before this collections of scientific works have been published in the University.
The University has its own printing-house supplied with modern equipment due to which it meets high standards of polygraphic works.
In 1999 “Agrogitaspyur” consultive service was included in the structure of the University as a separate structural department with the assistance of the US Agricultural Department. Its mission is to popularize the achievements of the agricultural science and to raise the productivity of agriculture.
The University is really proud of its biological museum, which is one of the best museums in Europe. The presented rare expositions are interesting not only for scientists and students, but also for sculptors and painters. No less valuable is the collection of SAUA history museum.
The University has two training and experimental farms with total area of 1130 ha, specializing on livestock, plant, fruit, grape, vegetable production. Soon the completely renovated training and experimental plant for working out milk and producing dairy products will be set working. Magistrates, post graduates and scientists of the University carry out their practical research work in these facilities. The authorities of the University introduce extensive programs in order to stabilize functioning of the training-farms and to arm with progressive technical appliances.
The administration and the Trade-Union Committee of the University pay great attention to students and employees’ rest and spare time.. The boarding-house “Zartonk” built in Aghavnadzor village of Kotayk region creates all the necessary conditions for all-the-year-round holiday.
CHAIR OF VETERINARY SANITATION EXPERTISE AND ZOO- HYGIENE
The sphere of the Chair lecturers’ activity is not limited within the frames of an educational program. The scientific-practical work is carried out in three directions:
Veterinary sanitation expertise of meat and products, slaughter of animals with parasitical diseases.
Impact of outward factors on the natural resistance of farm animals.
Improvement of general sanitary conditions of the establishments of cattle-breeding and processing enterprises.
In the Chair exceptional attention is paid to rendering of consultative and practical support to the veterinary sanitation services of the Republic.
CHAIR OF BREEDING AND FEEDING OF FARM ANIMALS
In the Chair scientific-experimental work is carried out on the improvement of species of farm animals bred in the Republic. A program is worked out concerning the formation of agricultural signs of horned cattle, and special attention is paid to the investigation of the influence on the duration process of embryonic period.
The pedagogical staff of the Chair renders throughout support to farms: holds consultations, training lectures on rational and effective use of feed resources.
Visiting all the livestock-breeding regions of the Republic, the specialists of the Chair render practical assistance not only to farmers. Most of them carry out purposeful work for training future farmers.
CHAIR OF MORPHOLOGY OF FARM ANIMALS AND OBSTETRICS
In the Chair scientific work is carried out concerning the revealing of the causes and pathogeny of gynecological diseases and mastitis of cows. Morphological investigations of separate sections of sheep and goats are implemented as well.
The Chair systematically assists farms and the personnel of the scientific-experimental economy of SAUA on the questions of preventing, diagnosing and treating of different gynecological diseases of animals and organizing their artificial insemination.
