The College of Veterinary Medicine at Nanjing Agricultural University (NAU)

The College of Veterinary Medicine at Nanjing Agricultural University (NAU) can trace its history back to 1927 when SoutheastUniversity and the National Central University established departments of veterinary medicine. In 1952, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine was established at Nanjing Agricultural College. In 1984, the Department of Animal Husbandry and the Department of Veterinary Medicine were set up at NAU. In 1994, the Department of Veterinary Medicine expanded into the College of Veterinary Medicine. Over the years, the College has made great development. In 1998, the College obtained the right to award doctoral degrees in the first-level discipline of Veterinary Medicine. Preventive Veterinary Medicine at the College is a state key discipline, Theoretic Veterinary Medicine is a provincial key discipline, and Clinical Veterinary Medicine is a key discipline of the university.The College has two key open laboratories of the Ministry of Agriculture.They are the Laboratory of Animal Disease Diagnosis and Immunology, and the Laboratory of Animal Physiology and Biochemistry. In 2003, the program of Veterinary Medicine at the College was selected as a provincial program for key construction. The College offers two BSc programs, three MSc programs, five PhD programs and one postdoctoral program.
BSc programs: Veterinary Medicine, and Veterinary Pharmacy
MSc programs: Theoretic Veterinary Medicine, Preventive Veterinary Medicine, and Clinical Veterinary Medicine
PhD programs: Theoretical Veterinary Medicine, Preventive Veterinary Medicine, Clinical Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Biology, and Animal Quarantine and Safety of Animal Products
Postdoctoral program: Veterinary Medicine
Currently, the College has 68 faculty members, including 20 Professors, 20 Associate Professors (associate research professors and senior laboratory technicians), and 18 Lecturers (laboratory technicians).Among the faculty members, twenty- three are PhD degree holders, ten are MSc degree holders, sixteen are PhD Supervisors and twenty-six are MSc Supervisors.
The College is composed of three departments:Theoretic Veterinary Medicine, Preventive Veterinary Medicine and Clinical Veterinary Medicine.The College also has a veterinary hospital, an experimental animal house and a veterinary pharmaceutical factory. The College offers the following subjects:Animal Anatomy, Animal Tissue and Embryos, Animal Physiology, Animal Biochemistry, Veterinary Pharmacology, Veterinary Pathology, Infectious Disease in Animals, Veterinary Microbiology, Veterinary Immunology, Veterinary Parasitology, Internal Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Surgery, Veterinary Obstetrics and Chinese Veterinary Medicine.The College has undertaken a great number of international research programs as well as domestic research programs at the state, ministerial, provincial and municipal levels. The faculty has made great achievements in the research of animal nutritional physiology, milking physiology, duck pests, swine asthma, swine fever, poultry cholera and cattle leukemia, contributing greatly to national economic and social construction and development. Ten scholarships are offered to top undergraduate and postgraduate students with all-round moral, intellectual and physical development: the Luo Qingsheng Scholarship, the Li Nong Scholarship, the Aimus Scholarship, the Huiruipu Scholarship, the Xinde Scholarship, the Liuhe Scholarship, the Hengfeng Scholarship, and theBeixing Animal Husbandry Scholarship.
The College not only takes a leading position in disciplines of its kind in China, but also gained a good international reputation.It maintains close ties with some institutes and universities in Germany, the U.S., Japan, Canada, Australia, the U.K., Spain and Denmark. Every year, the college sends faculty members abroad for further studies, degree studies, and joint research projects. In addition, the College offers annual international courses in on veterinary acupuncture.
