The National School of Veterinary medicine

The National School of Veterinary Medecin is a publicly-owned establishment of higher education of veterinary medicine, under the double supervision of the Ministry for Agriculture and the Hydraulic Resources and the Ministry for the Higher education and Scientific Research.


The National School of Veterinary medicine de Sidi Thabet (E.N.M.V.) was created by the decree law n°74-19 of 24 October 1974, ratified by the law n°74-95 of December 11, 1974 and the decree number 1913 of 14 August 2001 on the control of the overall framework of the study and collection requirements of the National Certificate of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. The School is in Sidi Thabet, commune of the gouvernerat of Ariana, located at a score of kilometers in the North of the capital on the road of Bizerte, near the principal cattle-rearing areas of the country.

Teaching structure :
The National School of Veterinary medicine underwent a remarkable development since the Nineties and this in several fields (Teaching, equipment, constructions, regulations).
Teaching is in load of 47 titular hospital teachers and 06 contractual with the existence of: *
Three departments:
- Department of clinical sciences: Pulpit surgery, pulpit pathology of the cattle, pulpit poultry farming, pulpit medicine, pulpit reproduction, pulpit contagious and pulpit parasitology.
- Department of the livestock productions: Pulpit Hygiene of the Foodstuffs of Animal Origin, pulpit animal husbandry, pulpit food and pulpit marine biology.
- Department of fundamental sciences: Pulpit anatomy, pulpit ana-path, pulpit biochemistry, pulpit pharmacy, pulpit physiology, pulpit microbiology


The National School of Veterinary medicine de Sidi Thabet is a teaching hospital establishment in charge of a mission of higher education, research and continuous training. It is the single institution in Tunisia which trains the veterinary doctors. It contributes to the development within the framework of the economic, social and cultural complementarity.

C Missions: 
 Teaching and research relate to:  

- Production, nutrition, reproduction and the health of the animals, on the economy of the breeding, on hygiene, medicine, biology, the pharmacy and surgery of the animals.  

- Production and the control of the food products of animal origin.  

- Relations between the man and the animal and their medium for the protection and of the defense of the public health and the environment.


C Admission:

  Since the order number 1913 of 14 August 2001 on the control of the overall framework of the study and collection requirements of the National Certificate of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, will be accepted in first year of the first cycle is done by way of national contest :

- Students having regularly continued the studies of the first year at the preparatory institutes being studied of engineers die "Biology and geology" or a cycle of preparatory study abroad allowed in equivalence.

- Students best classified who achieved successfully a first cycle of studies in ground and life sciences in one of the educational establishments higher and scientific research.

C Organization of teaching:

The studies for obtaining the diploma for the occupation of veterinary doctor of medicine include/understand a first cycle and a second cycle of studies one two years duration old veterinary surgeons each one and an interned training course one one year duration. 
From the first year of the second cycle, students occur in the clinical activities, internal and external consultations and the surgical operations under the monitoring of the teachers


Certificate of end of schooling:
For the students who made a success of the second year of the second cycle and who validated their practical training courses of the years of studies and the interned training course.


Doctorate in Veterinary medicine:

For the titular students of Certificate of End of Studies and which supported successfully their thesis of Doctorate under the authority and/or the direction of a Professor or Aggregate Lecturer.

Scientific research in veterinary medicine is of immense importance on the national scale and this for various reasons: 
•  Socio-economic importance in the field of the breeding, the success of the idea of development of the livestock production is in connection primarily with the insurance of a correct hygiene, or else the losses will be immense on the local and national level. 
•  The respect of the medical standards for the exchanges of the live animals or the foodstuffs of animal origin, especially during implementation of the agreements of UATT 
• The influence of the health of the animals on human the health plan sight the existence of the zoonoses.

C The principal research topics are: 
  • infectious Abortions in the small ruminants 
  • Theilériose bovine 
  • Brucellosis 
  • Hydatidose 
  • Physiopathology and management of the reproduction at the bovines 
  • Broncho-pneumonopathies of the horse 
  • Techniques and surgical pathology of the locomotor apparatus 
  • Control of the factors of health and quality of milk in traditional breeding 
  • Broncho-pneumonopathies of the young bovines 
  • food Quality and safety 
  • mineral Food of the bovines 
  • Use of the probiotiques ones 
  • histological Diagnosis of animal pathologies 
  • Anatomy and metabolism of the dromedary 

* Three research laboratories:
  • Biology and pathology of the Dromedary: Professor in charge Mohamed Habib JEMLI. 
  • Epidemiology of enzootic infections of the herbivores in Tunisia, parasitic and bacterial infections with vectorial transmission and paratuberculosic injection: Professor in charge Mohamed Aziz DARGHOUTH. 
  • Control diagnosis and means of fight of spongiform encephalopathies and abortive néosporose in the ruminants in Tunisia: Professor in charge Abdelkader AMARA

* Five research unities:

  • Medical safety and health of the aquiculture and fishery products: Professor in charge Slaheddine DHAOUI.
  • Control metabolic diseases and néonatales at the dairy bovines in Tunisia: Professor in charge Samir BEN ROMDHANE.
  • Increase in reproductive efficiency in the bovine, ovine and caprine breedings: Professor in charge Mourad REKIK. 
  • Epidemiology, tracking and control of Echinococcoses in Tunisia: Professor in charge Samia LAHMAR.
  • Impacts economic and medical of respiratory, infectious pathology and néonatale of breeding of the horses in Tunisia: Professor in charge Ahmed CHABCHOUB.

C Indicators of scientific research :

  • Training of the researchers and the technicians by the university training courses and diplomas like the master 
  • The development of the scientific co-operation between the Tunisian and foreign establishments 
  • Publication of the scientific results in national or foreign private reviews or with the participation and the presentation of a conference


Parallel to its activities of teaching and research, the School is invested of a mission of public utility.
The service of the consultations is opened with all and offers high level services – Medical imagery (Radiography, Echographie, Endoscopie, ECG…):

The library roughly contains 2000 important scientific and technical works on the veterinary medicine and animal science and includes the majority normal and electronic international cyclies in the field of veterinary medicine and biology of the animal and it also provides the complete range of the doctoral theses discussed to the School


It comprises a room of reading offering 50 places for students, a room of reading for enquiring teachers and a room of the periodicals and a room of data processing



The School lays out:  

  • Of a university hearth for students and coeds in priority for those which reside apart from the gouvernorats of Tunis, Ariana and Ben Arous. 
  • A daily shuttle between Tunis and Sidi Thabet is ensured by the bus of the School. 
  • The restaurant of the School is opened to all the external students and to interns. 
  • It should be noted that the university hearth and the restaurant are closed during the university holidays.


  • Several sports activities are offered to the students insured by a professor of physical and sporting education: Football, Volley-ball, Basket-ball, tennis table with tournaments and excursions. 
  • the School has of a sports ground, a cafeteria, a gaming room and a room of television. 
  • Various clubs of students (Environment, biology, visual arts, Music…)
