The University of Dar es SalaamThe University of Dar es salaam is the oldest and biggest public university in Tanzania. It is situated on the western side of the city of Dar es salaam, occupying 1,625 acres on the observation hill, 13 kilometers from the city centre.
It was established on 1st July 1970, through parliament act no. 12 of 1970 and all the enabling legal instruments of the constituent colleges. Prior to 1970, the university college, Dar es Salaam had started on 1st July 1961 as an affiliate college of the University of London. It had only one faculty- the faculty of Law, with 14 students.
In 1963 it became a constituent college of the university of East Africa together with Makerere University College in Uganda and Nairobi University College in Kenya. Since 1961, the University of Dar es Salaam has grown in terms of student intake, academic units and academic programmes.
The Library is the heart of the University of Dar es Salaam and it is an integral part of the University’s mission which revolves around teaching, research and consultancy. It is also a legal depository for materials on Tanzania, including government publications, University publications and UN and allied agencies publications. The library maintains five major collections: Arts and Social Sciences, Law, Science and Engineering, Reference and Document Delivery and East African which is a research collection. There is also ICT unit which provides technical and managerial support to realize excellence in teaching, learning and research.
The library provides access to both print and electronic information resources including number of print and electronic journals and books. It maintains a collection of more than 400,000 titles and over 2,800 printed journals and a number of electronic journal databases.
The library also provides information services to library users within and outside The University community. These services include: lending of library materials, document delivery services, traditional and electronic references services, Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI) and Current Awareness Services (CAS). Other services provided by the library include research, publication and consultancy, information literacy and computer training for library users and conference facilities.
University of Dar es salaam offers various academic programmes leading to the award of certificates, diplomas, and degree. A total of 4 certificates, 5 diplomas and 63 undergraduate degree programmes are offered at various academic units of the University of Dar es salaam
The number of students admitted at the University of Dar es salaam has been increasing steadily, from 14 in 1961 to 18,266(11, 472 male and 6,794 female) undergraduate degree and non-degree in the 2007/08 academic year. Female students constitute 37.2% of all undergraduate students at the University of Dar es salaam.
