OUR MISSION
- to train animal scientists of excellence in order to fulfil the research, extension and development needs of South Africa in order to improve the quality of life of all its inhabitants.
The Department of Animal Science commemorated its 75th anniversary in 1996, which makes it one of the oldest established departments of Animal Sciences in the country.
The Department offers various graduate and post-graduate training programmes in:
- Monogastric and ruminant nutrition
- Development physiology and meat science
- Animal breeding
- Livestock management
- Reproduction physiology
- Sheep and goats (including wool production)
- Dairy cattle

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME
B.Sc. Agric
4 year course
(Medium of instruction is Afrikaans only)
In order to produce scientists who can serve the livestock industry with the necessary professional skills basic scientific support is essential. The first year of study is therefore devoted to introducing the students to basic subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Statistics. These subjects are supplemented during the rest of the first year course by Biochemistry, Animal Physiology and Genetics.
The undergraduate (bachelor's) programme leads to the B.Sc.Agric degree (field: Animal Science). The programme covers the integration of knowledge of ecology, biochemistry, physiology, nutrition, breeding, production and product quality, as well as the management of animal production systems for increased production and production efficiency in an environmentally friendly and economically efficient manner. The broad programme Animal Production Systems is divided into the following fields of study: Animal Science and Physiology, Biochemistry and Physiology with Animal Science, Animal Science with Agronomy, Animal Science and Agricultural Economics, Animal Science and Aquaculture and Animal Science and Nature Conservation. Students following one of these fields are thus prepared for a career as a consultant, entrepreneur, manager, technician, agricultural extension officer, product development manager, production manager in animal science and related animal science industries.
The fields of study, with the majors of the programme Animal Production Systems shown after the colon, are:
- Animal Science: Animal Science
- Animal Science with Agronomy: Animal Science
- Animal Science with Conservation Ecology:Animal Science and Conservation Ecology
- Agricultural Economics with Animal Science:Agricultural Economics and Animal Science
- Aquaculture and Conservation Ecology:Aquaculture and Conservation Ecology
- Aquaculture and Animal Science: Aquaculture and Animal Science
