Agriculture

Philosophy and Goals
The need to transform the very rich and diverse Agricultural and natural resources of our catchment Zone within the South-South region in particular and the nation in general for sustainable socio-economic development formed the first basis of the establishment of the Faculty of Agriculture in 1983. Built within this philosophy is the additional goal of development process of economic transformation . These are the driving forces behind the activities of the Faculty. The 21st century has now been predicted to be the century of "Knowledge" particularly as it relates to Science and Technology applied to Agriculture, information technology and industrlization. The challenge of Nigeria today and the 21st century is therefore the transformation of its educational, Science and technology values; to eradicate poverty and improve quality of life by actively responding to the basic needs of food scarcity among others. The achievement of these goals require adequate funding for teaching, research and students practical laboratory and field training programmes

 
Objectives
To develop programmes covering the broad area of agriculture, forestry and fisheries
To turn out production-oriented graduates in agriculture, forestry and fisheries by making it mandatory for each student to maintain a plot in the field, a pen of animals or be in a team to manage fish ponds
To train personnel capable of teaching and conducting relevant research in Agriculture Fisheries, Forestry and wildlife, and capable of taking up employment anywhere in Nigeria in any aspect of Agriculture and related areas.
To produce graduates who will profitably put their skills into operation by establishing and operating their own farming enterprises.
To produce extension workers who should be able to communicate effectively with rural farmers.
To conduct research into various aspects of Agriculture, Forestry and Wildlife and Fisheries.
To establish a viable commercial farm.
To engage in other agricultural activities
Faculty Board Of Studies
This is the highest academic statutory committee in the Faculty, whose decisions are subject to the recommendation/approval of the University Senate especially on Academic matters. The Dean of the Faculty is the Chairman of the Board, while other members of Academic staff in the Faculty as well as representative each of Nigerian. Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR), Rubber Research Institute of Nigeria (RRIN), Edo State Ministry of Agriculture, Faculty of Life Science, University of Benin etc also members while the Faculty Officer is the Secretary to the Board.
Faculty Journal
The Faculty has a Journal (JOURNAL OF AGRICULTURE, FORESTRY AND FISHERIES [JAFF] ) that was inaugurated in the year 1994 for the spade work. The first issue of the Journal came up in the year 2000. It started with publishing one a year, but it now publish twice (every six months) a year (June & December). Articles can be sent to the Editor –in-Chief, JAFF, Dean’s Office, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria. E-mails: smarton1@yahoo.com. GSM: +234 805 525 8441.(with a handling charge of N500.00 0r $10.00).
External Linkage Programme
This is a very important arm of our Faculty activities. Apart from Community Service, it is a unit with a global mission bearing in mind the Millennium Development Goals(MDGs) with respect to the University/Faculty/ Departments Mission, Vision and Objectives. For example, the Kilishi Plant Coordinated by Professor J.O.Igene of Animal Science Department in Collaboration with Wilberforce University, USA has already made its global mark. Also, a lot our members of staff are on local and International collaboration at different levels. Continuous collaborations for the benefit of mankind for sustainable research work can be initiated. Animal Science
 

Mission
To enhance the quality of human life, through developing Animal and Food Science to ensure the sustainability of production systems and to conserve the natural resources, animals and environment for future generations. And to inform Public Understanding as well as cooperate with other Institutions with the aim of blossoming as a world referral centre in our various specialties.


Aims and Objectives
  • To develop programmes as well as routine updates in the areas of Animal Science, Animal Products, Agricultural Biochemistry and Nutrition, Food Science and Technology, Agricultural Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Specialist extension and Mini livestock conservation 
  • To turn out production-oriented graduates in our field through practical oriented and, local and international relevance, capacity building and training 
  • To produce personnel who are capable of teaching initiating and, conducting environmentally relevant and sustainable Researches 
  • To produce graduates for both public and private sectors, as well as proud entrepreneurs.
  • To produce extension workers, to organize extension linkages and activities. Organize August Short term schools, gender studies in our field and collaborations including on-farm, on-village on-urban adaptive researches 
  • To conduct research in various aspects of our field including collaborations and external linkages. Engage in Local and International related shows, exhibitions, exchanges, programmes and academic linkages
  • To provide a forum for the discussion of Scientific, social and educational problems relevant to the development of animal production and health, Food Science and Technology, Agric Biochemistry and Nutrition, among others. 
  • And to support the publication of Scientific and educational materials related to our discipline.
  • To establish a Documentation Centre and data bank on tropical Animal Science. 
  • To do all such things that are incidental or conductive to the above objectives directly, and conductive to, or incidental to the attainment of the above objectives including the relevancies emanating from human civilization dynamics and Alumni relations.

Soil Science

History
Soil science department was recently carved out of the department of crops and soils in 1996 which has existed since 1991/92 as a single Department.
Aims and Objectives
  • To produce graduates who will be useful to themselves, the public and the private sector; 
  • To produce postgraduate students whose knowledge and practical experience can compare with such students produced in similar institutions within and outside Nigeria
  • To attract Researchers and Consultants from Universities inside and outside Nigeria for the purpose of exchanging knowledge, scholarship and experience 
  • To be a consulting centre for all agencies that have anything to do with Soil and Environmental Studies.
